Life of a Messianic Jew

Finding the Perfect Marriage Ketubah for Your Messianic Wedding

There are a plethora of traditional ketubot, marriage contracts, for traditional Jewish weddings, but when you want to honor Yeshua as the center of your marriage and home, finding one that reflects that can be difficult as the ready-made options are fewer.

There's nothing inherently wrong with having a ketubah that does not mention Yeshua, but if you desire to, it takes a bit more research and planning.

This one from Grace Alon, features a gold backdrop and standard text. Grace Alon is a messianic artist who immigrated to Israel from England and produces ketubot for the messianic community.

The text reads:

This Ketubah witnesses before G-d and all those present on the ___day of ___ in the year___ corresponding to the ___day of___ in the year___ the holy covenant of marriage was entered into between the bridegroom ____and the bride___. They vowed to one another: I will look to Messiah Yeshua as the rock, shepherd and rich source of love, joy and peace in our marriage. With all my heart, I commit myself to you in faithfulness and love all the days of my life."

This next ketubah is from Shop Israel Direct. It featured a chuppah, two doves, a charming backdrop of Israel, and hand lettered calligraphy. While the text doesn't mention Yeshua specifically, it does include a a verse from Matthew 19:5 where Yeshua quotes Moshe saying, "For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."

Price: $194

This next ketubah is from Holy Land Marketplace by Israeli artist Amy Sheetreet, based in Florida (USA). It has a gorgeous distressed parchment on Old City brick design with a pomegranate tree going down the middle (a symbol of love). This one mentions Yeshua boldly.

The text for the chatan/groom reads: "Even as Yeshua our Messiah loved His kehilah and gave Himself for her, so I give myself to you in love..."

The text for the kallah/bride reads: "Even as the kehilah of Yeshua our Messiah submits to Him and honors Him, so I submit myself to you in love..."

Etsy & Custom Ordering

If you still haven't seen a ketubah you like or want to customize one with your own text, there are many ketubah artists on sites like Etsy. You will most likely pay more, anywhere from $250-1,200 dollars, but you can work one on one with your artist. Some have a quick turnaround time of 2-3 weeks, others need months.

Amy Sheetreet creates messianic ketubot. She is based in Israel and could be contacted for a custom design.

There are hundreds of ketubot with standard Jewish wedding text on Etsy. If you want one custom made messianic that mentions Yeshua, be up front with your designer. Message them before you place your order to be sure they are willing to do so.

Yeshua is a hard line for many and it's better to know right away if this would be an issue.

You can find this one from Say Anything Design here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/177372477/modern-ketubah-tree-of-life-interfaith

Daniel Sroka is the artist behind Modern Ketubah.com. He creates modern and lovely ketubot for both Jewish and non-Jewish weddings, but whether or not he would make one for a messianic Jewish wedding, one would have to ask.

As with Etsy, traditional Jewish ketubah makers will often branch out making ketubot for other faiths or even atheists but depending on their beliefs and convictions, in the same way observant rabbis do not conduct interfaith weddings, some find it offensive to create a messianic Jewish ketubah.

It's important for ketubah searchers to respect their boundaries and conduct themselves with the love of Yeshua as we all one point did not know our Messiah.

Pray and let Hashem guide you. At the end of the day, while your ketubah is special, the real contract. is signed in your herts. Have fun and happy shopping. :)

Note: It is standard for observant couples to run their ketubah text by their rabbi and even moreso if you are messianic and he is not. If a cantor or someone else is marrying you, do the same. If your officiant is unwilling to marry you with a messianic ketubah, you will want to know before the day of your wedding. It could be that it is better to be married by someone who respects your beliefs.

Many want to be married by their family rabbi or the rabbi who married their parents and siblings. Some may want to be married in their family synagogue and cannot choose who officiates. While Yeshua is the Prince of Peace, He also is also a dividing sword. There are times you will have to decide what matters the most. But He will be with you through it all.

May He bless and keep you in your marriage and wedding plans! Keep praying. It will all work out.
