Who is the Synagogue of Satan? A Letter to the Church of Instagram

A very common belief floating around is that the synagogue of Satan referred to in Revelation 2:9 and 3:9 is modern day Israel and all Jewish people. This is false.

The belief has been spread widely by the Black Hebrew Israelite group as well as many others who simply don't like Jews.

Reading the complete book of Revelation, or even the complete chapters, quickly dispels the lie. Whenever you don't understand a passage of the Bible, it's important to seek out an answer rather than repeating what you've heard others say.

One must read the Bible for themselves, and not just individual verses, but in context.

Praying before reading and asking the Holy Spirit to help you is also key.

Read the Bible in more than one translation using sites like BibleGateway.com. You can also read the Word alongside commentaries by respected teachers on sites like EnduringWord.com.

Taking things back to your trusted pastor or leader, is another way to learn. Listen to sermons by veterans of the faith like R. W. Schambach. Combining all of these efforts will help you develop sound theology.

GotQuestions.com is network of sites with a shared mission: to glorify God and reach people for Christ by providing biblical answers to spiritually related questions.

They answered the question perfectly: What is the synagogue of Satan?

"The synagogue of Satan is mentioned twice in Revelation, once in Jesus’ letter to the first-century church in Smyrna and once to the church in Philadelphia. In both cases, the synagogue of Satan is opposed to the mission and message of the church.

To the church in Smyrna, Jesus says, “I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! I know about the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan” (Revelation 2:9).

To the church of Philadelphia in Asia Minor, Jesus says, “I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you” (Revelation 3:9).

In short, the synagogue of Satan was a group of unbelieving Jews who were persecuting Christians. These groups were guilty of slandering the church in Smyrna and opposing the church in Philadelphia in some way."

Why does this matter today? The enemy has always hated Israel. Israel is evidence of God's covenant with mankind. It is evidence of the Word. Both the people and the place of Israel are proof of the Bible being real and alive. Israel is where Yeshua sprung forth from and where He will return.

"Behold, the day of the Lord is coming, and your spoil will be divided in your midst. For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem; The city shall be taken, the houses rifled, and the women ravished. Half of the city shall go into captivity, but the remnant of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

And fight against those nations, As He fights in the day of battle. And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, Which faces Jerusalem on the east." Zechariah 14: 1-4a

The enemy will use whatever lies he can to turn people against Israel. Saying that the modern day state is irrelevant or wrong, or that the people in Israel are occupiers, is just another one of his tactics to use people to do his dirty work.

When the whole world is doing something, we as believers should take note that it's probably not for us. We do not share the same spirit of the world. If the world is against Israel, if unbelievers are against Israel, that should tell us something.

We are not saying Israel should be worshipped or idolized, but ignoring God's prophetic plan for Israel and His everlasting covenant is a mistake. Genesis 12:3 says, "I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you."

Has God turned His back on Israel? No. Romans 11 makes that clear.

"I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin." Romans 11:1

The bottom line is that God loves Zion. He loves the world and used Israel as an example of what it is to be called His own people. The plan was always to save anyone who would put their faith in Jesus.

"I you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." Romans 10:9

The next time you hear someone repeat a lie from the enemy, use the Word of God to refute it, just like Yeshua did after fasting in the desert. Why? Because God's Word is a powerful weapon and will never return to Him void.

God bless you.
